As you probably know by now I am a big advocate of people taking charge of their own health. I was actually thinking about promoting a product “Healing Kitchen” that I absolutely believe in as a cornerstone of good health but it is a bit pricey. With that statement I found myself asking ‘what price is health?‘ and ‘What does it cost to be sick?” As some of you may know we do a lot of pro-bono work because we believe in making our services accessible to everyone. And it comes to a point where we do so much pro bone work we have to stop and actually earn some money… anyway – so I am thinking about how we ‘cost‘ our health on the basis of what things cost and then I get this email:
It’s Time to Declare Your Health Independence
If the current health care debate has anything to teach us, it’s that it’s going to be more expensive in the future to get sick. Much more. On the other hand, it will pay you handsomely to keep yourself and your family well. Insurance premiums are already rising. They’ve doubled since 2000 — and one California provider is preparing customers for an immediate 39% premium hike. One US city now bills $300 for a 911 call (expect this idea to spread).
Just in case you need extra motivation to start taking better care of yourself and your family, here are some scary statistics on the high price of illness these days:
- 62.1% of bankruptcies in the US are medically-related
- 50% of all home foreclosure are caused by medical problems
- 37% of Americans pay more than $2,000 for medical bills out of pocket each year
- 30% of workers lose two or more weeks of work because of illness annually
- 46.6 million Americans have no health insurance
- 14,000 workers are losing insurance coverage every day because of unemployment
Meanwhile, Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic (with nearly 30 million Americans already diagnosed and perhaps 10 million walking around not knowing they have it). Cancer is now the nation’s leading killer, striking 1-out-of-2 sometime in our lives. And heart attacks still claim 500,000 of us every year. These are not good survival odds.
These are some seriously scary stats…
Here are 7 Simple Ways to Keep Out of Medical Debt (why not call it – ways to save your life and some money to enjoy it with???)
Numerous studies show that the majority of the health problems that send us to the doctor and the hospital are almost entirely preventable by making a few simple lifestyle changes…
1. Quit smoking
Not only is it the number one cause of lung cancer, but smoking robs your body of vitamins and nutrients that keep your immune system strong so you can resist illness and disease. Smoking also inflames your arteries and organs, setting you up for heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Here are the immediate benefits:
- 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate and blood pressure drop.
- After 2 weeks to 3 months: Your circulation and lung function improve.
- After 5 years: Your risk of stroke is the same as if you had never smoked.
- After 10 years: Your chances of dying from lung cancer are now 50% less than if had you continued to smoke.
- After 15 years: Your risk of heart disease is the same as if you’d never smoked.
Site owners comment – This is such a no brainer…giving up was the best thing I ever did. It has put thousands back in my pocket and added years to my life.
2. Fast food – a silent killer…
Sure, it looks like a bargain — but it’s just plain bad for your health. It’s full of bad fats, empty calories and devoid of the nutrition your body needs to prevent illness, colds, and infections. If you add in the long-term health cost of fast foods, it’s certainly not a “happy meal” nor is is cheap or affordable in the long term.
BENEFITS: Save yourself from heart attack: Trans fat in fast food is responsible for as many as 30,000 premature coronary deaths per year (82 each day).
Site owners comment – There is so much more to say about nutrition! This is a start but falls way short of the mark. You all saw “super size me’ didn’t you? Well if you didn’t go get it. Fast food is not cheap . At home we can make a ‘gourmet’ or delicious and nutritious sandwich or burger for half the price of standard meal deals. It is NOT cheap! More on this in another article.
3. Give up sodas
Excessive sugar consumption is the leading cause of diabetes and weight gain. And cancer tumors just love sugar. Sodas are the top source of calories in the American diet. These are empty calories that immediately get converted into blood fats (called triglycerides) that are stored around your belly and on your hips and butt. Simple solution: Replace sodas with iced tea or carbonated water with a slice of lemon and you can lose 7-20 pounds a year.
Site owners comment – No Brainer – and these drinks are expensive and they dehydrate you. Dehydration is so common. Most people do not have a clue they are dehydrated!
4. Take a multivitamin
Pick a good one. Cheap “house brands” … low-cost multis … and one-a-day types don’t provided sufficient protection against illness, so they’re a waste of your money. Shop around. When it comes to vitamins, you usually get what you pay for. Get started soon:
BENEFITS: A five-year medical study showed significant cash savings from a reduction in hospitalizations for heart attacks, as well as from a reduction in overall hospitalizations, nursing home stays, and home health care.
Site owners comment – We use a multi vitamin we love. It is only available my mail order and is made from fresh fruits and veggies – nothing synthetic. When my mother (83) was in hospital recently and eating hospital ‘food’ we supplememted her with these vitamins and a few other things and she did well recovering from MRSA, leg ulcers and a major operation. I can assure you neither the hospital ‘food’ nor the gallons of intravenous antibiotics they pumped into her played any part in that out come…We are happy to answer any questions on the vitamin by email.
5. Eat more fresh veggies and less red meat
Ounce-for-ounce, fresh vegetables provide more health-protecting nutrition and weight-reducing fiber than packaged foods that are advertised as “convenience” items (the health problems they can cause down the road are no convenience at all). Red meat is expensive and — because of the unhealthful way it’s raised in the US — its filled with hormones, antibiotics, and pesticide residues that do nothing but bad things for your health and your weight.
BENEFITS: Those who eat a Mediterranean-style diet characterized by more fresh veggies and less red meat have a 22% less chance of dying from any cause, a 14% reduction in cancer risk, and a 21% lower chance of dying from heart disease.
Site owners comment – This is a tricky point which we will explore in a separate post. Suffice to say that as with everything there is always more than one point of view. BTW I am an ex vegetarian who ALWAYS argues for more fresh fruit & veggie consumption. One point – unless you buy organic fruit and veg make sure you wash them well. Conventional fruit & veg are grown with pesticides.. More and more people are allergic to the chemicals in the food chain – they are on/in fruit and veggies too.
6. Become more physically active
Exercise is good medicine. Every cell and organ in your body works better when you’re active. Our bodies were designed to move, which is how life-giving oxygen and nutrients get delivered from head to toe. Studies show that people who are physically active — even if it’s just a 30-minute stroll around the block a few times a week — get sick less often, feel better, and live longer.
BENEFITS: Reduces the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, colon cancer, depression, and anxiety. It also reduces the risk of dying prematurely from all causes.
Site owners comment – This is SOOOO true – once I understood this – everything else changed because I knew I had to use it or lose it. When we were travelling we walked a minimum of 6 hours a day – and it was FANTASTIC! But if you had told me that was possible before we travelled I would have called you crazy. It made me think about life before cars…For those people who are sick, recovering from an illness, have CFS or some other form of restriction have a look at the Shakti Mat. You can get the hormonal benefits associated with exercise by using the mat.
7. Lose some weight
Not only do those extra pounds look bad in the mirror, they’re a breeding ground for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes — the top three killers of Americans today. Remember: simply drinking one less soda a day, reducing the size of your servings and walking 30 minutes four times a week can achieve consistent weight loss. You don’t need to go on a diet or even join a gym to achieve this. Simply following the first 6 tips here can achieve this easily.
BENEFITS: Losing as little as 10% of your current body weight will cut your risk of these major diseases by 50-80%. It also can reduce the duration of hospitalization and the incidence of postoperative complications. Hospitalization costs $3,000 to $5,000 per day — with extra tests and services, it can add up to $50,000 per week!
Site owners comment – Not as easy or straight forward as it sounds though is it? How many of us have struggled with that one? Me too – I empathize. More on that too in a separate post.
I Know, I Know … You’ve Heard It All Before
Accomplishing these 7 steps is easy … unless you’re addicted to cigarettes and fast food, hate vegetables, and are a confirmed “couch potato” who hates exercise. Then, these simple steps may seem far beyond you.
That’s just how the CEOs of the corporations profiting from YOUR illness and weakness want you — and how we got ourselves in such bad physical and fiscal shape in the first place.
Giving in to the “soft life” ? where we ignore the consequences of surrendering our independence to corporations, doctors, and the experts? is exactly how the equity in our homes got stolen … how $750 billion of our tax dollars went to bail out the big banks (which we’re now paying for) … and why two-thirds of us are so overweight that we’re classified as “clinically obese.”
We’ve allowed ourselves to be seduced by the glitzy foods ads … easy credit … and the “pay later” mentality that characterizes “the American way.” – Well, Folks … “Later” Is Here… nobody likes pain and discomfort, but being afraid of it is to be ruled by it. Our collective will power has become as flabby as our muscles and our thinking. It’s time to toughen up and meet the challenge of these times. If we don’t, we might as well snap on the collar and chains of economic slavery for good.
How to Stay In Shape — Even If You Have Arthritis
The old adage “Once you stop moving, you start dying” is absolutely true. Inactivity triggers a domino effect that leads to overweight … cardiovascular problems … incomplete circulation … toxin accumulation … metabolic disorders … and accelerated aging.
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 osteoarthritis throughout my entire body. But it hasn’t stopped me. And I haven’t taken an Advil or any other painkiller/anti-inflammatory in over two years.
What’s my secret? I’ve developed a unique arthritis-reversing program treatment that halts joint inflammation … rebuilds damaged cartilage … and restores mobility in 30 days or less.
It’s not some “miracle” supplement, doctor-administered procedure. Instead, hundreds of scientific studies prove that arthritis, joint pain and degenerating immobility can indeed be reversed with this remarkable all-natural approach.
Most orthopedic surgeons will tell you it’s not possible… But that’s because they’re only taught about painkillers and joint replacement surgery. Here’s what my surprised orthopedic surgeon wrote in my records after viewing my x-rays last year:
“This patient displays a remarkable recovery. His x-rays show new cartilage where there was very little just one year ago…”
Cool huh? Now that’s what I am talking about. How did our (collective) ancestors march across and between countries, build nations, from the ground up, and many of the other things we can only marvel at? For many of us getting out of bed is an amazing feat! They did not start the day with a pain killer, a coffee and maybe grabbed a donut or muffin on the way to the farm or whatever they were going… Not only should we marvel at their feats we should also take real note of their diets and lifestyle.
We leave you with some of my most favourite quotes from Hippocrates (the Father of medicine – 460 BC Year of Death: 357 BC). Note Hippocrates lived till 97yrs with no western medicine:
- Let they food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food
- Walking is mans best medicine
- If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.
You’ve got the Power!
