Eating Raw – Raw Food

August 10th, 2010

i-like-it-raw I have to tell you about my latest adventure. As you know I am, and  always have been, very interested in all aspects of health. Perhaps it was growing up with an invalid and oodles of chronic illnesses that did it? I have always been interested in health, healing, nutrition and people taking control of their own lives. And when we combine health and self determination my ears really prick up!

My version of health and self determination is my practice. I am a homoeopath who incorporates EFT and NLP as appropriate. I encourage clients to understand what is ‘going on for them’ because in my world view, illness is always a symptom of something else. Homeopathy is brilliant for ‘getting underneath’ and treating the whole person. So for me homeopathy is a big part of healthy self determination.

Even I’m Amazed

June 29th, 2010

hoemopathic6 No secret I am a homeopath and it’s no secret that lots of folks out there don’t understand or agree with modalities like homeopathy. You know what? DON’T CARE!!! I am sooooo over being brow beaten by people who haven’t got the faintest idea about homeopathy. These same people then presume to tell me – not ask – but TELL me why homoeopathy is a sham and by association so am I.  And I am officially over trying to reason with or just inviting people to think about homoeopathy or any other form of ‘alternate‘ healing. We are all adults and as such have the right to make our own choices – knock yourself out! Just leave me alone – OK? I respect your choices – offer me the same courtesy.

The reason for this rant? Truthfully, I have had my doubts about homeopathy too occasionally. And no not because it does not work – it has never let me down… Rather it’s in those moments when I am designing a presentation on homeopathy and I think about how ‘science’ does not support the modality. We are all so hypnotised by materialism. I think most us who work outside the mainstream have occasional doubts – and why not? We are constantly ridiculed, questioned, forced to defend ourselves and our work in a way those in the mainstream have never even dreamed of. And why would they? They are the mainstream, accepted ‘understood’… Anyway, every now and again I have my not so secret doubts and then a lesson appears. I have to say that after this latest lesson I have renewed respect for the power of this modality.

Swine Flu & You

November 30th, 2009

probiotic4 It’s no secret I am a homoeopath and no that’s not me in the photo…but I would really like some of whatever it is she is taking… I love homoeopathy and I love being able to work with people to develop their own health and wellness goals/strategies. One of our strategies for achieving that is to construct our world with as few chemicals as possible. While I am not anti 21st century or anti doctor in any way I do believe in – and enjoy the positive effects of – eliminating harsh chemicals – especially for our children. Their systems are SO sensitive and we need to protect/support them for as long as possible – they will bombard themselves into toxic overload when they are adolescents…To see the amazing effects of eliminating chemicals for yourself, take a look at the outcomes being achieved in areas like the treatment of autism and autism spectrum disorders. Once harmful chemicals are removed from kids DIETS and environments, those same kids (and their families) transform’ as if by magic. Anyway – I digress.

As the northern hemisphere head into (swine) flu season and with that whole issue of  the Ukraine strain lurking – an article on (swine) flu prevention and treatment seemed timely. I have written what I think of as key interventions/strategies depending on the client and their sitiation.

Resveratrol and Cancer

September 9th, 2009

resveratrol - 60 Minutes Cancer continues to rise so lets use our resources differently to meet and counter act it. There are interesting outcomes related to cancer from the recent Resveratrol studies. No doubt you have seen the 60 Minutes footage; those encouraging images of Resveratrol fed mice having greater stamina than their non Resveratrol laced buddies. Just in case you haven’t click here view the 60 Minutes footage (you need to scroll down the page).

Having viewed the footage you have no doubt reached the same conclusion as us; the therapeutic claims from human trials in diabetes looks great and now human trials in treating cancer are very encouraging. This coupled with the purchase of the Sirtris start up company for almost 3/4 of a billion US dollars indicates these researchers are onto something big. Or are they?

Coca Is Not Cocaine

August 27th, 2009

Coca leaf Last year our family spent 10 months living in Bolivia where the altitude of the cities we stayed can reach as high as 4,500m above sea level (approx 15,000 ft).  Although we lived in Cochabamba we often traveled to the (de facto) capital La Paz which is approx 3,640 m (or 11,942 ft) above sea level; as you might have guessed the oxygen is a bit thin. For those who have no experience of high altitudes it means that when you walk, go up stairs or do any form of physical exertion there is not enough oxygen being passed into your body. The effects of altitude, otherwise known as Altitude sickness, can result in a variety of symptoms including being light headed, headaches, excessive tiredness, vomiting and in extreme cases it can be fatal. The airport international airport Bolivia has a oxygen room for those people adversely affected ed by altitude. Even the locals from Cochabamba (which isn’t exactly low…) complain about the altitude in La Paz.

The locals, who chew coca for a variety of reasons, advise you to drink mate (tea) of Coca to fix altitude sickness but our experience is that it takes a fair amount of tea and to tell you the truth my bladder cannot take it, between the altitude and then need to run to the toilet – it’s not a good combination. My partner a Homeopath suggested a Homoeopathic medicine for altitude, which is, surprise surprise, made from coca. It worked a treat and saved my bladder – phew!!!

Why Detox?

July 3rd, 2009

detox_cleansing If your home, car or any other thing precious to you needed cleaning or de-cluttering you would do it right? After all you love that precious thing and want to keep it in optimal working order right? The same principle applies to your most precious ‘possession‘, your body.  So while we all accept that the outside of our body needs regular cleaning (though try telling our 10 year old boy that…) few of us recognise the need for regular internal cleaning. A regular internal cleanse aka detoxification, detox or detoxing, helps keep the body working optimally.

Why consider a Detox ? Our bodies are regularly exposed to a barrage of toxins – for example the body naturally creates toxins as a by product of metabolism. Add to this the toxins created by stress, the effects of overeating, the sluggishness of our systems due to poor exercise habits, our continued exposure to environmental pollutants and daily exposure to any of the 14,000 food chemicals within processed foods and medications!. That is without mentioning smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and drugs. And spare a thought for your liver. The liver, the organ of detoxification, has to work harder now than at any other time in history – so to speak – because of all these contaminants.  We also absorb toxins through our skin and we come into contact with many hundreds of chemicals on a daily basis – it’s no wonder our bodies are stressed and we regularly exhibit signs of toxicity. OK – I hear you say – we are always exposed to toxins – it’s all about our level of exposure – right?
